So How Bad Is This? Here Are Some Facts on Everton’s Season So Far.

There have been lots of emotive articles being written on fan sites up and down the land – this one included. People are talking about poor tactics, managerial dithering/mistakes on subs, players being out of form, poor refereeing, injuries, players not trying, etc.

Hell, I even started writing an article suggesting that Tim Cahill needed to come back to show the team some passion. I then had a word with myself and binned that one…

Anyway, I decided, putting my best Fat Spanish Waiter accent on, to look at the facts about our season so far. Should we be worried? Is this normal?

Where to start? Well, last season –we’re 16 points worse off than last season and need to win 17 of our remaining 18 games to end up with the same points tally as last season so probably best to skip that one (37 pts compared to 21 this year).

I have collated all of our league games so far and compared them to how we did last season (relegated teams are aligned to those coming up by position/play-off). It shows the points we’ve gained when compared to last season, and both of them were surprises/had a degree of luck involved including the last-minute equaliser at Anfield.

Those games that we have lost points in – we’ve lost points in 5 of the 9 games we’ve played at Home compared to last year! And not turned around any losses or draws from last year into better results.

Hate to say it too, but the games we have left – are you confident that we can beat those teams at home? We’re going to have to beat the teams around the bottom of the table convincingly to stay clear of the chasing pack in my opinion. Do we have the fight in us though?

Other Stats/Mentions

– We’ve not kept the same team for two games in a row all season.

– We’re ranked 18th in the division for defence (goals conceded), and 19th at Home against the other clubs (14th Away). Last season we were ranked 3rd overall (7th at Home, 2nd Away). Something has clearly changed in our Away record!!

– Our Head of Medicine has left the club after 18 players reported hamstring injuries this season. Martinez is apparently looking at this himself as he is qualified to do so. Like he doesn’t have enough to do already!

– We have 1 point less than at the same stage of the 2000/01 season when we finished 16th with 42 points.

– We have 3 points less than the 03/04 season when we finished 17th with 39 points.

– We have 2 points less than Wally Smith’s 2001/02 team that saw the Scot get sacked shortly afterwards.

– We have 2 less points than the 98/99 season when we stayed up only due to Kevin Campbell’s goals. Anyone got his number?
